Hugh Strange - Architecture at the Building Site: A Consideration of Drawing, Construction and Labour in Challenging the Separation of Project and Building
The research examines how the separation of Project and Building has been, and might be, challenged. A series of case studies are undertaken, including the change in W.R.Lethaby’s attitude to the building site between his first and last built works, and the development of a way of building by Walter Segal that radically reconfigured project roles. These case studies focus on labour, construction and drawing in defining the relationship between Project and Building. The research questions how my own practice might change, and my own ways of working develop, to allow a closer relationship with making: merging design and construction, and fostering an increased sense of immediacy.
Hugh Strange is principal at London-based firm Hugh Strange Architects. He is currently undertaking a PhD by Practice at the Oslo school of Architecture and Design in parallel with his studio work.
